Thank you so much for joining us in this conversation. We would love to know your back story. What are some of your fondest childhood memories about spending time outdoors?
Wow! What a great question, and what fond memories it brings back indeed! My answer is, without a doubt, spending the weekends dirt-biking and camping with my father in the Rockies back in Canada. My dad used to bring me on his bike until I was about five, when I could finally ride on my own. Well, until I wiped out and would end up back on his! We'd have the most incredible adventures, often just the two of us – deep out in the wilderness. My dad had a book of all the logging roads, and we'd go out all day exploring. Often, we'd need to cross rivers where the bridge had been washed out. We'd stop to push boulders over the side of a cliff at certain places to see how far we could get them rolling (extra points if we managed to take out a few trees!). We'd discover old mining camps hunters' cabins and stop to eat lunch by a river or up on top of a mountain. At night we'd build fires, talk story, philosophize, and plan the next great adventure to be had the following day. Honestly, I couldn't have dreamed of better experiences than those I had growing up with my dad.
As a teenager, what type of career did you imagine for yourself?
Honestly, pretty much what I'm doing now! I've always felt drawn to the healing arts and called to help ease the pain and discomfort of those in need. I suppose I did think about going to medical school to become a doctor, but I knew deep down that nature offered us everything we needed to heal. I also knew that as great as drugs and surgery were for emergencies, they were not the answer to maintaining and creating lasting health. Luckily, a college in my hometown offered an entire program in the field of natural healing. I later got my master's degree in acupuncture and Oriental medicine, which (and of course I'm biased) I think is one of the most fantastic, most comprehensive, and sophisticated medical systems ever invented.
What do you most enjoy about your current work?
I love witnessing that lightbulb moment in people when I explain the basic principles of Chinese medicine, how their bodies are connected to natural phenomena, how their symptoms are interconnected, and simply their body's way of getting their mind's attention that something is out of balance. I love bearing witness to people's transformation, watching the human spirit in action. For me, there is no greater asset in life than your health, and there is no greater reward than helping people align to the incredible, inherent wisdom of their bodies.
What are some of the retreat experiences offered by REVIVO Resorts?
We offer six core retreats: De-stress & Relax, Immune Reset, Sleep Well, Mindfulness & Emotional Balance, Longevity & Anti-ageing, and Detox, Weight Loss and Reshaping. Each retreat is tailor-made to suit each individual, so very often, a retreat ends up being a combination of a few or all of them! Perhaps the one I'm most excited about is our new Immune Reset, which focuses on fasting techniques, and nutrition to support a healthy microbiome and thus, boost the immune system.
Are there any special stories that you can share about a person that was impacted by a stay at REVIVO Resorts?
Not firsthand at REVIVO, unfortunately. I started in July and the resort has been closed due to Covid. I'm delighted to say we're now due to reopen on April 1st, and I can guarantee there will be many remarkable stories to share not long after that. I am, however, currently guiding an online REVIVO spring cleanse. I've been conducting weekly webinars on the principles of nutrition and REVIVO philosophies. We've about a week left, and I'd say it's been a great success! There are quite a few people who've lost close to, and over, 10 lbs. and many more who've commented on their increased energy levels and clearer complexion and a more focused state of mind.
How do you want people to remember their experience at REVIVO Resorts?
REVIVO means "I'll live again" in Latin. To me, this inspires hope that transformation is possible. So, I suppose I want people to remember their time and journey at REVIVO as a positive transformational experience, no matter how big or small.
What is your favorite book and how do you apply it to your life?
Ooooooh, tricky question! It's so hard to pick a "favorite," I've read countless genuinely fantastic books, so I'll go with the first one that comes to mind, The Man Who Tapped the Secrets of the Universe, by Glenn Clark. It's a tiny book about the life of Walter Russel. I'm dumbfounded how few people I meet who have no idea who this man was, and neither did I until about 14 years ago. Those who do know him know him as the modern-day Leonardo da Vinci. Walter was a professional musician, sculptor, champion figure skater, IBM advisor, scientist, philosopher, architectural designer, illustrator, portrait painter, and author of many brilliant books. My favorite is The Secret of Light. (Oops, so I guess that's two favorites!). How do I apply it to my life? It's a great reminder of the human potential, that really, so much is possible if you're determined, focused, kind, and you believe in yourself.
Thank you for this meaningful conversation. We wish you continued success.
