THE SPA IN ME
Interview With Dr. Kausik Roy, MD., AustinMD Aesthetics & Wellness
Dr. Roy is a board-certified internal medicine physician who became a Functional Medicine physician. He witnessed first-hand that conventional medicine is only helpful acutely, while Functional Medicine is the true way of healing and reversing disease conditions.
Thank you so much for joining us in this conversation. We would love to know your back story. When you were younger, what did you imagine your job would be? When I was younger, I loved taking care of animals, so I’ve always thought that when I grew older, I’d follow my father’s footsteps and become a veterinary physician. As I grew older, my passion for helping others outgrew my love of animals. I became a physician to help heal others.
How did you find your way to your current career at AustinMD Aesthetics & Wellness? After practicing conventional medicine for about 10 years as a hospitalist, I had a massive heart attack that nearly killed me. Even though I was performing my job thinking I was helping others heal, I realized that conventional medicine didn’t have much to offer to help me heal. Through my journey to recover from this event and heal myself, I recognized that Functional Medicine or Eastern Medicine was the way to truly help heal the body. I also discovered that skin health is closely tied to gut health, which is the largest contributing factor to inflammation or healing. My vision was to create a clinic where one can come to heal from head to toe.
What lessons have you learned while working in aesthetics and wellness? While studying Functional Medicine, I learned that inflammation is the root cause of many diseases, and not the opposite. I also learned that gut health is the corner stone to overall health. On my journey to heal my body, I needed to improve my gut microbiome (gut bacteria), as it truly impacts all aspects of health, especially skin health.
What I find interesting about AustinMD Aesthetics & Wellness is the number of services that you provide. If you could trade places to work in a different area of your company, what would you choose and why? Also, what makes that part of your company appealing? As a physician, I practice Functional Medicine to help heal my patients from the inside. I also have a wonderful Medical Aesthetician who performs all of our laser and micro needling treatments to promote skin regeneration and improve the outward appearance. My passion is figuring out where the root cause of inflammation lies, whether it be optimizing gut health, balancing hormones, detoxifying, or stress management. Once inflammation is healed on the inside, then the external treatments will be far more effective.
How do you want people to remember their experience at AustinMD Aesthetics & Wellness? Genuinely cared for by licensed medical professionals who are focused on your overall healing and wellness.
Is there any wisdom or advice you could share for anyone considering a career in the health, spa, or wellness industry?
Overall health starts with gut health.
What is your favorite life quote and how do you apply it to your life? “Let your food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” I eat healthier with the goal of eating a variety of colors to feed the gut microorganisms.
Would you share your website and social media pages so that people learn can learn more about AustinMD Aesthetics & Wellness?
Thank you for this meaningful conversation. We wish you continued success.
